THE LEWIS AND CLARK SCHOOL COMMUNITY GARDEN AND HYDROPONICS LAB

How it began…

It all started with a vision of having a school garden. The garden school committee was formed which included the principal, assistant principals, transition coordinator, teachers, staff, parents, and custodial staff who played different roles to make the garden possible. Our garden was launched on June 5, 2019 and was named the Lewis and Clark School Community Garden, later renamed to “Eagles Go Green.”

Our Goal

The goal of the garden is to create a multi-community centerpiece unlike anything else on the school grounds and indoor. It will work to promote a tighter community amongst Westchester Square residences as well as establish the Lewis and Clark School as a key visible member within the community.

The reason why the garden was created

The garden was created to give students opportunities to grow their own food. The produce will be use in our culinary program as part of the school internship program called, “Horticulture (Garden to Cafe)” This will also help our students develop skills necessary for work based learning which will prepare them for independent living in the outside world. Our aim is to teach and promote healthy eating habits among our students while being self-sufficient.

Through the garden program the students are acquiring skills on different methods of planting as follows: hydroponics, container gardening, raised beds gardening, transplanting, growing herbs, propagating plants from cuttings, and planting bulbs. The students are learning about the needs of the plants, ways on how to take good care of the plants and how to maintain a garden.
