How does Physical and Occupational Therapy assist with Transition?

One of our main duties within the school system is to maximize the students’ independence within the school environment and prepare them to the best of our ability for the real world. Here are some fun “FIT4WORK” activities that can be done with your child at home to support his/her independence and prepare him/her for the future! Fill out the checklist and share it with your child’s teacher/ school staff and therapist so together we can best prepare our students!

Home Participation Checklist:

  • Carry items to and from the home and within the home (i.e. groceries, laundry basket, packages)
  • Pick up items from the floor (from floor to place on table or in garbage)
  • Carry items up and down the stairs
  • Put groceries away overhead (in high cabinet)
  • Put groceries at waist height (on counter)
  • Remove laundry from dryer or place laundry in washer machine
  • Carry laundry basket
  • Puts clothes away/sorts clothing in drawers
  • Dusts at waist level
  • Dusts below knee level to floor
  • Vacuums and/or sweeps
  • Empties/loads dishwasher
  • Puts dishes away
  • Sets the dinner table
  • Wipes down tables, counters
  • Makes Bed
  • Participates in community group activities or exercises

If your child is not participating in any of these activities, it’s never too late to start! The time is now!
