We Do It for the Culture™
We Do It for the Culture™
Dear Families,
I hope this letter finds you well. We are excited to introduce a new and innovative educational initiative at P12X that we believe will have a profound impact on our students' social and emotional development. We Do It for the Culture™ is a culturally responsive social-emotional learning (SEL) curriculum rooted in hip-hop culture, designed for students in grades 6 through 12.
Hip-hop culture has long been a powerful force for artistic expression, storytelling, and social commentary. It has provided a platform for voices from marginalized communities to share their experiences, struggles, and triumphs. Our We Do It for the Culture™ curriculum seeks to harness the positive aspects of hip-hop culture to enhance the educational experience of our students.
It is essential to distinguish between hip-hop culture and rap culture. Hip-hop culture is a multifaceted art form that encompasses elements such as dance, graffiti, DJing, and MCing (rapping). It serves as a powerful tool for storytelling, self-expression, and social commentary. Hip-hop has been a means of communication, empowerment, and cultural preservation for communities around the world.
On the other hand, rap culture, a subset of hip-hop, has sometimes been criticized for promoting violence, misogyny, and homophobia. It's important to recognize that not all hip-hop or rap promotes negative messages. Our curriculum focuses on the broader hip-hop culture and its positive impact on society.
We Do It for the Culture™ covers a wide range of topics, including the five SEL competencies:
- Self-Awareness: Helping students understand their emotions, strengths, and areas for growth, and fostering a positive self-image.
- Self-Management: Teaching skills to regulate emotions, set and achieve goals, and make responsible decisions.
- Social Awareness: Building empathy, understanding diverse perspectives, and appreciating the value of cultural diversity.
- Relationship Skills: Developing effective communication, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills.
- Responsible Decision-Making: Encouraging students to make ethical, safe, and responsible choices in their lives.
Our curriculum incorporates hip-hop culture to engage students in meaningful discussions and activities related to these competencies. We believe that by tapping into the rich history and artistry of hip-hop, we can connect with our students on a deeper level and provide them with valuable life skills.
Furthermore, We Do It for the Culture™ will also incorporate current events into the curriculum. We believe it's essential for our students to stay informed about the world around them, engage in discussions about social issues, and develop critical thinking skills. By connecting current events with the principles of hip-hop culture and the SEL competencies, we aim to empower our students to be active, informed, and responsible global citizens.
We are excited about the potential of We Do It for the Culture™ to positively impact our students' lives, and we invite you to join us in supporting this initiative. We look forward to working together with you to provide our students with a well-rounded education that embraces diversity, promotes empathy, and equips them with essential life skills.
If you have any questions or would like more information about the curriculum, please feel free to contact us. Thank you for your ongoing support in helping our students thrive academically and emotionally.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kuvana Jones
